Stryker Settles Hip Implant Lawsuits

Multiple product liability lawsuits related to defective hip implants have been settled, according to a statement Monday from the medical device’s maker Stryker Corp.

The Rejuvenate and ABGII hip implants were recalled by the company in 2012 because of a potential for corrosion leading to inflammation in the tissue in and around the defective medical device.

According to the settlement, the company will pay $300,000 to each plaintiff who required surgery to correct the issue, as well as providing additional compensation for those who suffered complications during the corrective surgery or incurred other damages.

Multiple federal and state lawsuits were filed on behalf of an estimated 3,000 patients who received the Stryker hip implants and had the corrective procedure.

The company said it would continue to defend itself against remaining claims.

Medical devices are commonly implanted in patients to correct a many different health problems. These instruments can be wonderful, even life-saving, but when they are defective it can cause serious, long-term harm to the patients who were supposed to be helped.
