Galveston County Woman Files Lawsuit Against BP

On Nov. 15, a Galveston County resident filed a lawsuit against BP Products North America Inc. claiming an alleged release of toxic chemicals at the company’s Texas City refinery resulted in high levels of benzene exposure.

According to the lawsuit, filed in Galveston County Court at Law No. 3, a hydrogen compressor in the plant’s ultracracker unit when offline on Nov. 15, 2011. Court documents show the suit claims BP “opted to send the gasses to a flare.”

The petition claims BP acted knowing that chemicals would be allowed to escape into the atmosphere. Shauna White, who filed the suit, claims the release was an “intentional act” and seeks unspecified monetary damages.

A similar event occurred at the plant in April and May 2010 for which BP recently won a “test trial.”
