The Remington 700 is being recalled after thousands of owners have complained of the popular rifle firing without the trigger ever being pulled. Potentially 7.5 million rifles, including the Model Seven, were manufactured and issued with a defected trigger called the X-Mark Pro. Remington is warning owners with these models to stop using the rifle immediately and to bring it in for inspection as the XMP trigger may have an excessive bonding agent that can cause unintentional discharge.
A class-action lawsuit is in effect after the defect has led to many deadly injuries, including the case of the Stringer brothers where a boy accidentally killed his brother after the rifle fired without the trigger being pulled. According to reports, Remington has downplayed the accusations for decades claiming “human error” as a result of the mishaps and not a manufacturing issue. However, after several lawsuits and evidence showing Remington was aware of the problem as early as 1975, the company finally came to the judgement of issuing a recall.
The recall is geared specifically towards the Remington Model 700 or Model Seven rifles with an X-Mark Pro® trigger. Owners can enter in the serial number on the Remington website to see if their rifle needs to be inspected. Or, they can call on its toll-free XMP-Recall Hotline at 1-800-243-9700. Remington says they will provide shipping, inspection, replacement the trigger mechanism (if necessary) and return at no cost to the owner.
