2 Students Killed in Houston School Bus Accident

Two students died in a Houston school bus accident Tuesday morning on the 610 Loop. Two other students and the bus driver were also injured.

According to the Houston Police Department, the Houston Independent School District bus careened off an overpass after being hit by another vehicle on the eastbound frontage road of the South Loop near Telephone Road.

HPD spokesman Victor Senties said the driver of a Buick LeSabre told investigators she hit the side of the bus after veering away from another vehicle she thought was drifting into her lane. The bus crashed into the guardrail and plunged off the overpass, landing on its side on Telephone Road.

According to HISD spokeswoman Holly Huffman, four students were aboard the bus, along with the bus driver, when the accident occurred at 7 a.m. The bus was on its way to Furr High School at 520 Mercury Drive.

One girl died at the scene, and another girl died later at the hospital. Two male students and the bus driver were transported to area hospitals, as well. Their conditions were not yet known.

The details of the accident were still being investigated by both the Houston Police Department vehicular crimes unit and Houston ISD Police. The driver of the Buick LeSabre was detained for questioning. No charges had been filed at this time, police said.
