Tulane Green Wave football player Sule Osagiede died Thursday morning in Beaumont, Texas, as a result of injuries sustained in an auto accident.
Osagiede was a one-year letterwinner as a linebacker, and played in nine games as a true freshman during the 2008 season, registering seven tackles.
He missed the 2009 season after he was medically disqualified from playing football because of a severe neck injury sustained during preseason camp in August.
“We are deeply saddened to learn the tragic news about Sule and we offer our condolences to his family, friends, classmates and teammates,” Tulane Athletic Director Rick Dickson said in a statement.
The Beaumont Enterprise reports that Osagiede was thrown from a Jeep on Interstate 10 East near 11th Street, while driving with a passenger, a 25-year-old Louisiana man. Both cars involved in the accident flipped. The passenger of Osagiede’s Jeep Liberty was taken to the hospital, as was the 33-year-old Beaumont, Texas driver of an Expedition involved in the same wreck.
