You guessed it. Loop 610 has regained the top spot on Texas’ list of most congested roads. Although it’s connection to 1-10, U.S. 59 and U.S. 290 contribute greatly to this “honor,” it’s also considered a main commuting route for the Greater Houston Area, which averages 1.1 million hours of delay per mile each year, according to a study by the Texas A&M Transportation Institute.
The recent road construction on U.S. 290 has also vastly contributed to these delays since the beginning of its rebuild in 2011. Although the U.S. 290 revamp seems to be never ending, projects are planned to relieve the Loop 610 congestion, including a $447 million reshape project – set to start construction next year- and the development of elevated express lanes. Transportation officials have also considered “bus-only” lanes along the Loop and Post Oak as an alternative for commuters to use in Uptown (not scheduled to be ready until 2019.)
Loop 610 wasn’t the only Houston chart topper in this year’s report. Six of Texas’ top 10 most congested roadways were in Harris County, including I-45 (shocker) from Sam Houston Tollway W to N Loop Fwy/ IH 610.
Let’s move these projects so Houston can get moving!!
