Cleaning chemicals are said to have ignited an explosion on an oil rig platform in Lake Pontchartrain Sunday night.
The explosion was said to have “rocked homes” in the area near St. Charles Parish and north Kenner, leaving five people critically injured and two in stable condition. The victims all suffered blast-type injuries and burns, and were treated at University Medical Center in New Orleans and East Jefferson General Hospital in Kenner. The Coast Guard is currently coordinating a search for a missing man.
The platform, owned Clovelly Oil Co., was being cleaned by workers at the time of the explosion. It is primarily used to transfer oil, but it is still too early to tell if spilled oil was a contributing factor.
