Fall accidents are the number one killer on a construction job site, with more construction workers dying from falls on the job than from any other cause. However, out of all fall-related fatalities at a construction site, it is roofing-related falls that cause the highest number of fatalities.
According to the results of a new study, falls from roofs account for as many as one-third of all construction fall fatalities. In fact, fall accidents account for more than three-quarters of all fatalities in the roofing industry every year.
The study was conducted by the Center for Construction Research and Training Data Center, and the data was related to construction fall fatalities between 1992 and 2009. The results of the study were published in a study titled Fatal Falls from Roofs among US Construction Workers.
According to the data, there were a total of 20,498 workplace-accident fatalities in the construction industry between 1992 and 2009, and approximately 1/3rd or 6,591 of these fatalities were linked to fall accidents. Out of these, approximately 2,163 fatalities were linked to roofing-related fall accidents.
According to the study, construction workers have a much higher risk of roofing fatalities, and these include roofing workers, and workers employed by roofing contractors. The risk of a roofing-related fall seems to be much higher when the worker is employed by a small establishment, with less than 10 employees. In these establishments, 67 % of workers died in roofing-related fall accidents, while 52% died in other types of fall accidents.Hispanic workers also seem to account for a high proportion of roofing-related fall fatalities. While people in this group accounted for approximately a quarter of all construction accident fatalities, they accounted for 35% of fatal roofing-related falls.
