An explosion this morning at an ExxonMobile plant has left more than three dozen people with minor injuries.
Around 11:00 am, a large “boom” was heard by nearby residents and was quickly followed by a plume of thick black smoke emerging from the plant. Community Awareness Emergency Response teams were able to contain the fire late Wednesday afternoon.
ExxonMobil said a unit processing propane and propylene burst into flames which forced the city of Baytown to issue a shelter-in-place to surrounding neighborhoods and schools. They also conducted air quality monitoring at the site and fence line as a precaution.
So far, all injuries have said to have been minor and that no adverse environmental effects have been detected.
