Here is a look back at the highlights of 2014 with SMSH:
Honoring Arthur: Arthur Schechter, a former U.S. ambassador and founding partner of SMSH, was honored with the Spirit of Life Award on Feb. 8 at the 2014 “There’s No Place Like the Home” gala. The event benefited residents of Seven Acres Jewish Senior Care Service.
50 Years of Helping Injured Workers: On April 27, Arthur Schechter celebrated his 50th anniversary of practicing law this month, becoming the nation’s longest practicing plaintiff’s maritime attorney.
Super Lawyers: Matthew Shaffer, and Arthur Schechter were selected to the 2014 Texas Super Lawyers list. Cynthia Huerta was named to the 2014 Texas Rising Stars list.
Tugboat Captain Killed in Accident: Matthew Shaffer was retained to represent the wife of a tugboat captain who was killed August 14 in an accident on the Industrial Canal.
Website Makeover: In May, our firm launched our newly redesigned website as part of our continual efforts to provide the best information and most experienced legal assistance to victims of all types of accidents. The new responsive site is easily accessed by computer, smart phone or tablet, with a design that is visually appealing, user-friendly and easy to navigate.
Roustabout Injured in Offshore Accident: Matthew Shaffer filed a lawsuit on behalf a client who was injured while working as a roustabout for a major drilling contractor on a jack up rig.
Captain Suffered Severed Leg: Matthew Shaffer filed a lawsuit on behalf of a Texas man whose leg was severed while working on a vessel in the Gulf of Mexico. The captain’s leg was caught in the power take-off shaft that had no guard over it and was amputated in the incident.
2 Jury Trials Wins Against Allstate: SMSH attorney AJ Rosenfeld returned successful jury verdicts in two auto accident cases against Allstate Insurance. In the first case, a husband and wife, were traveling on Interstate 10 near Columbus, Texas, when they were rear-ended by another driver. The jury awarded the wife $50,868.50 and the husband $37,960. In the second case, Rosenfeld’s client was rear-ended on Highway 146 in Baytown, Texas. The jury awarded the injured party $10,000.
Young Boy Electrocuted at Lake Conroe Resort: Jonathan Harris filed a lawsuit on behalf of Gerald Orvis, the father of Andrew Orvis, an 8-year-old boy who was electrocuted and killed at Piney Shores Resort in Conroe, Texas. The lawsuit alleges that Andrew Orvis was sitting on a dock and electrocuted when his legs came into contact with faulty and inadequately maintained electrical wiring attached to the dock.
