A Houston woman was arrested Wednesday on a hit-and-run charge in the death of a cyclist.
Documents filed by the Harris County District Attorney’s Office allege that Margaret Renee Mayer, 35, intentionally did not stop her car after striking a woman on a bicycle.
According to authorities, Mayer had been drinking the night she struck Chelsea Norma, who was riding home from work at Whole Foods Market in Montrose about 10:20 p.m. Dec. 1.
Court documents state that a co-worker told police Mayer had admitted being drunk the night of the accident and said Mayer thought she might have hit someone.
Mayer was convicted in 2002 for drunken driving. The current charge does not contend that Mayer broke the law by striking Norman but by not stopping to help her. Norman, 24, was alive when she was found after the accident but died a few days later in the hospital.
The hit-and-run charge is a felony. Because it involved a fatality, it could carry a penalty of up to 20 years in prison.
