A bus carrying a group of senior citizens was struck by a freight train Tuesday afternoon in Biloxi, Mississippi. The charter bus was holding 48 passengers and was enroute to a nearby casino when it got stuck trying to cross a railroad track. During that time, a CSX train approached and ultimately struck the bus, killing four and critically injuring seven. 41 people were taken to nearby hospitals and one was life-flighted from the scene.
Seven people managed to get off the train right before it struck.
According to a bystander, it looked like the bus had stalled right as it was trying to cross the tracks. A man in a nearby car apparently got out of his vehicle to help people get off the bus. Other witnesses said they heard the train continuously blowing its whistle to warn the the driver of the bus that it was approaching. The accident is currently under investigation by the NTSB.
The passengers were on a week long casino trip through Mississippi and Louisiana. 27 passengers were part of the Bastrop Senior Citizen Center in Bastrop, Texas.
