An explosion aboard the bulk carrier Tamar this past Monday killed two crew members and left two others injured. The explosion occurred 1,300 miles off the coast of Cape Cod, Mass. while the international carrier was en route to Azores, Portugal. At the time of the incident, the captain of the Tamar contacted watch standers at the Coast Guard command center to report the explosion occurred in the ship’s forward storeroom.
The New York Air National Guard’s 106th Rescue Wing was first to respond with two small boats and advanced life-saving equipment accompanying. The two injured crew members were treated for massive burns and were picked up by the Portuguese Coast Guard via helicopter.
The carrier continued on its journey to Portugal once the fires resulting from the explosion were extinguished. The cause is still under investigation.
