15 Dead, More Missing In Canada Railroad Accident

Fifteen people are confirmed dead and about 45 others are still missing after an unmanned Montreal, Maine & Atlantic train carrying 72 carloads of crude oil crashed in a small town east Montreal, Canada, on July 6. An explosion resulting from the crash ripped through Lac-Megantic in Southeastern Quebec, in the country’s deadliest railway disaster since 1986.

According to police, criminal acts are being investigated as a possible cause for the incident, though no charges have been pressed. Terrorism is not being considered as a factor.

Police and railroad authorities are investigating how the train, parked but unattended outside a neighboring town, barreled into Lac-Megantic and incinerated about 30 buildings.

Provincial police Chief Inspector Michel Forget said some facts pointed to criminal acts, potentially including criminal negligence.
