Investigators have determined the cause of death of a worker who was killed at the Port of Houston last month. The longshoreman, identified as ILA Local 24 member Francisco Montoya, was working on the Grebe Bulker during cargo operations when a crane lifting six bundles of steel pipes caused an adjacent stack of two bundles to topple over and crush the victim. According to maritime consultancy firm, Blueoceana, the strength of the plywood dunnage between the bundles may have contributed to the collapse of the stack.
The Grebe was in its sixth day of discharge operations at City Dock 20. Our condolences go out to the Montoya’s family, friends and co-workers.
