The Dallas Morning News released an extensive report last week on the dismal state of construction worker safety in Texas. The review of federal workplace data showed that workers in Texas job sites are 12 percent more likely to die on the job than someone performing the same work in any other state.
There about 580 more deaths in Texas construction workers over the past decade than would be expected based on the national average. Roofers, electricians and other specialty construction jobs accounted for 40 percent of this excess death toll, jobs that are often treated as independent contractors on a construction site.
The most common cause of death was falling, which accounted for nearly 300 deaths across the 10 years reviewed.
