Smart Car Driver in Critical Condition After Crash With 18 Wheeler

An 18-wheeler crushed a Smart Car early Saturday morning near Porter, leaving the car’s driver in critical condition.

The truck, owned by the Kroger Company, was changing lanes and failed to see the ultra-compact car, pushing it into a concrete barrier on U.S. 59 between FM 1314 and Community Drive. According to DPS, the Smart Car went over the concrete wall into the southbound lanes of the highway.

The woman who was driving the car was apparently ejected and found lying on the freeway, also on the southbound side. She is currently in critical condition at a Houston hospital.

Authorities said the investigation was ongoing and that charges are pending against the driver of the 18-wheeler.
