One Killed In New York Boat Explosion

A boat explosion at a New York marina fuel station left one man dead and another injured, according to an article in Newsweek.

A 33-foot motor boat was being refueled at the Manhasset Bay Marina in Port Washington on Wednesday when it burst into flames; the explosion hurled a man tending the boat into the water. Bob Hogan, a retired NYPD captain and former mayor of Plandome Manor, suffered fatal injuries. A passenger on the boat dove into the water, avoiding the flames and flying debris.

A marina worker suffered burns to his face and arms when he towed the smoldering boat away from the dock. He was hospitalized and in stable condition.

The explosion also set fire to the nearby dock, damaging several other nearby vessels and two docks.

Investigators are looking into the boat accident, including the possibility that gas buildup may have caused the explosion.
