National Safety Week 4: Don’t Drive Distracted

Distractions while driving are one of the leading cause of serious and fatal car accidents. No phone call or text is worth your life — or the life of someone else. Here are the National Safety Council’s tips for ending the distracted driving epidemic:

• Don’t schedule calls for times you will be driving.
• Let others know not to call if they know you are behind the wheel.
• Plan your day so that you won’t need to make calls while operating a vehicle.
• Change your voicemail message to something like, “Hi, you’ve reached (insert name). I’m either away from my phone or I’m driving. Please leave a message.” There are also cell phone apps that let callers know you are driving an unable to answer the phone.

Finally, if you’re just too tempted to answer the phone or respond to a text while driving, put the phone where it can’t be reached before driving.
