National Safety Week 4: Don’t Drive Distracted

The Houston car accident attorneys at Schechter, Shaffer & Harris, L.L.P., Accident & Injury Lawyers are all too familiar with the dangers of distracted driving. We’re pleased that the National Safety Council has made this critical safety issue the focus of Week 4 of June’s National Safety Month.

Distractions while driving are one of the leading cause of serious and fatal car accidents. No phone call or text is worth your life — or the life of someone else. Here are the National Safety Council’s tips for ending the distracted driving epidemic:

Don’t schedule calls for times you will be driving.
Let others know not to call if they know you are behind the wheel.
Plan your day so that you won’t need to make calls while operating a vehicle.
Change your voicemail message to something like, “Hi, you’ve reached (insert name). I’m either away from my phone or I’m driving. Please leave a message.” There are also cell phone apps that let callers know you are driving an unable to answer the phone.

Finally, if you’re just too tempted to answer the phone or respond to a text while driving, put the phone where it can’t be reached before driving.
