Authorities have identified a man who died Saturday in a scuba diving accident off the North Carolina Coast as Caleb Batson, captain of the Cherrio Lady.
The first mate of the vessel notified U.S. Coast Guard officials of the accident after Batson was found face down in the water. The Coast Guard then issued an urgent marine information broadcast to other boaters in the area.
According to Petty Officer Nate Littlejohn, the U.S. Navy Iwo Jima warship was about 15 miles away and was the first to respond. Batson was airlifted by a U.S. Navy helicopter to New Hanover Regional Medical Center. He was pronounced dead on arrival.
No other details about the incident were yet available.
