Three commercial fishermen suffered maritime burn injuries after their fishing boat caught fire along the St. Mary’s River yesterday in St. Mary’s Georgia. The three-member crew of the 24-foot fishing boat HAY BRUT reported a fire on board, to which the Coast Guard responded. The crew managed to put the fire out before the Coast Guard’s arrival.
The Hay Brut was towed to a pier in Fernandina Beach. The fishing boat crewmembers were taken straight to the hospital in a waiting ambulance. The crewmen suffered non life-threatening burn injuries according to multiple media reports.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission is investigating this incident.
The maritime lawyers and commercial fishing boat injury attorneys of Schechter, Shaffer & Harris, L.L.P., Accident & Injury Lawyers have handled burn injury cases for over 45 years. Burn injuries are some of the most devastating for offshore workers. At times, the burns suffered, even if mild, can prevent a fisherman or seaman from returning to work offshore. Being around chemicals, salty air, and rough weather conditions can aggravate the healing process of burn injuries which often take significantly longer to heal to begin with.
