Four Injured in San Antonio, Texas Construction Collapse

Four construction workers are hospitalized with serious injuries after a second-floor ceiling fell at a county justice center construction site in downtown San Antonio on Friday morning.  About 144 construction workers were at the expansion site in the 300 block of Dolorosa when the roof caved in at about 9:15 a.m.

Three workers were buried in debris at the Cadena Reeves Justice Center, where the county is building a 10-story addition.

Fire-rescue crews rescued the buried workers, while a fourth worker was able to walk from the rubble. Photos of the rescue can be seen here.

All four injured Texas Construction Workers were sent to Brooke Army Medical Center, two with life-threatening injuries and two hospitalized in stable condition.

After the four injured workers were located and transported, a scaffolding company stepped in to shore-up the building and make it safe enough for crews to re-enter and make sure no one else was trapped.

With a 20-by-70-foot portion of the second floor ceiling down, there was concern that more workers could be trapped, but so far no additional workers have been found.

The official cause of the collapse is still under investigation, but workers present on the scene said that there was too much weight put on the structure.

OSHA in on site investigating and the building has been closed until further notice.

Eventually, this new “green” building will be home to the district attorney’s office, district clerk, county clerk, auditor and others.  It is scheduled to be completed in the fall, but some offices are scheduled to start moving in this summer.  After Friday’s partial ceiling collapse, it is unknown if that timetable now gets pushed back.
