Francesco Schettino, former captain of the Costa Concordia, faced survivors of the fatal cruise ship crash as proceedings began in determining whether he would stand trial for allegations of manslaughter and abandoning ship.
Six crewmembers, including Schettino, are under investigation, as well as three workers in Costa’s crisis unit.
Schettino has admitted that he made mistakes but his lawyer, Francesco Pepe, argued that it was “absurd” to think his client was the only one to blame. The former captain accused the cruise ship company of mishandling the response and is suing them for unfair dismissal.
The cruise ship is still submerged in the waters off the Italian coast. Thirty-two people died in the accident, including two whose bodies were never found.
