Driver Pleads Guilty, Gets Probation In Motorcyclist’s Death

Motor Vehicle Accidents

A Texas City woman pleaded guilty Monday and was sentenced to probation and ordered to pay restitution after causing a crash that killed a motorcyclist in 2012.

Jennifer Strange Ellis, 34, collided with the motorcyclist, Eduardo Lopez, 46, after running a traffic light on Sept. 10, 2012.

“The allegation was that she was on her way to work, came up to the light and sped up trying to make it through,” said Logan Dietz, Ellis’ attorney. “He came out first around some cars, and she hit him.” Dietz said Ellis was extremely remorseful about what happened and decided to take a plea bargain that was offered.

Ellis was charged with criminally negligent homicide and received five years deferred adjudication probation, ordered to pay $3,331 in restitution, and required to perform 320 hours of community service.

Lopez wasn’t wearing a helmet when the accident occurred and suffered a head injury that was fatal, according to police. He died at the scene.
