Downtown Houston Texas Auto Pedestrian Accident Kills Joyce Levine

A woman was killed while crossing the street in downtown Houston last Thursday morning just before 11am on Travis and Rusk.  Police say a driver in a Mercedes SUV appeared to have run a red light, and 66 year-old Joyce R. Levine who was crossing the intersection was hit and died at the scene.

Police say the victim had the right of way to cross the street at the time. EMS crews tried to revive her, but were unsuccessful.

“Everybody’s eyes were just huge, they couldn’t believe what they just saw,” said eyewitness Monico Cortez. Police say the driver was not impaired and the lights appeared to be working correctly. The street was shut down for an hour or so while police conducted an investigation.

The driver stayed at the scene after the accident.  So far, no charges have been filed.

While walking through downtown Houston can feel scary at times with the amount of traffic, that does not in any way excuse drivers from yielding to pedestrians.  Let this sad accident serve as a reminder to all who drive the downtown Houston streets to please be careful of those walking and biking along with you.  Our city is becoming more and more pedestrian with urban living in downtown and midtown on the rise.  We need to respect those we share the streets with and drive carefully.  As Houston, Texas Auto Pedestrian Lawyers, we send our heartfelt condolences to Ms. Levine’s family, friends and co-workers in their time of mourning.
