One of the most frequent reasons distracted motorists who frequently use cell phones while driving cite for these practices, is that they are very good at multitasking. A new study finds that that may not be true after all. Many motorists, who claim to be good at multitasking, are likely not very good at devoting their attention to more than one task at a time.
The study was conducted by researchers at the University of Utah, which strongly recommends that motorists stop deluding themselves about their multitasking abilities. In the study, 70% of the participants claimed that they were very good at multitasking, which is statistically improbable.
In fact, the researchers found that people, who believed that they were good at multitasking, were not good at focusing on 2 different tasks at a time. The study finds that people, who frequently multitask, are not able to eliminate distractions while they perform activities, and therefore, take on more than one task to do.
Ironically, the persons who were found to be very good at performing more than one activity very effectively, preferred not to multitask. These people preferred to devote their attention to the task at hand.
It’s not as if multitasking gets better with practice. The more people multitask, the more likely they are to get even worse at it.
This is one more piece of research that firmly proves to Texas car accident lawyers that motorists cannot safely devote their attention to driving, while they are also texting or talking on a cell phone.
