A day care bus and a trash truck collided on Friday morning in Illinois, sending 11 children and 2 adults to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. One child was flown to a St. Louis hospital for precautionary reasons.
The truck was turning at what has been described as an unsafe rate of speed when it went up on two wheels, striking the rear of a day care bus that had just turned the corner. The bus was spun around and off the side of the road, while the truck overturned.
Investigators reported that the accident could have been much worse if not for a quick response by the bus driver, who accelerated and moved to the right lane when he saw the oncoming truck.
According to the director of Malone’s Day Care, the truck turned because it had lost brake functions. The driver of the waste container truck, Mason McCord, was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash, as well as improper lane usage.
