Commuters Spent 74 Hours in Houston Traffic in 2015

Americans spent more than 8 billion hours in traffic across the United States in 2015, according to a recent study released by transportation analytics firm Inrix.  The firm ranked the average number of hours a commuter spent in traffic in 2015 by city.  Houston ranked number four on the list with the average commuter spending 74 hours stuck in their car in Houston traffic.

Cities by Traffic Ranking

Below is a breakdown of the ranking of the top 10 cities in the U.S. with the most traffic congestion ranked by the average time wasted per commuter last year.

1. Los Angeles, CA – 81 hours per commuter
2. Washington, DC – 75 hours per commuter
3. San Francisco, CA – 75 hours per commuter
4. Houston, TX – 74 hours per commuter
5. New York, NY – 73 hours per commuter
6. Seattle, WA – 66 hours per commuter
7. Boston, MA – 64 hours per commuter
8. Chicago, IL – 60 hours per commuter
9. Atlanta, GA – 59 hours per commuter
10. Honolulu, HI – 49 hours per commuter

Although these cities have invested in other transportation options and programs, a strong economy typically results in more drivers.  Inrix provides these traffic analytics to government agencies in the U.S. so they can tackle transportation problems in their growing cities.

International Ranking

The U.S. accounts for 50 percent of the top 10 metropolitan areas with the worst traffic throughout the U.S. and Europe.  The only city worse than Los Angeles on the above list is London with the average commuter spending 101 hours of a year stuck in traffic.  Overall, U.S. commuters spent more hours sitting in traffic than any other country analyzed with 50 hours per commuter in 2015.  Below is the full list of countries with the worst traffic.

Methodology
