Breaking Houston News: Bush Airport Tram Accident | People Mover

Two Houston contract workers were injured today, one of them fatally, in a collision along the tracks of an elevated people mover at Bush Intercontinental Airport.  The Houston airport tram collision occurred about 11:40 a.m. on an elevated track near the Marriott Hotel and Bush Airport Terminals.  The contractors were working on a newly opened portion of people mover track.  First responders requested a high-angle rescue truck.

At first, reports were conflicting about the fact that one of the injured contractors has died.  Now, most media outlets seem to agree that on of the Houston contractors passed away at the scene of the workplace accident.  LifeFlight was called out to the scene to transport the second injured worker to Memorial Hermann Hospital.  His condition is unknown at this time.

No one was aboard the electronic automated people mover at the time of the dangerous collision, but the tram has since been shut down. Officials don’t know how fast it was moving at the time of the collision, but its maximum speed is 33 mph.

The automated people mover began operating about three weeks ago and is able to carry 5,000 passengers per hour in each direction it travels.

The cause of the recent Houston accident remains under investigation.  The Houston Fire Department is at the scene.  We will continue to update you on this story.
