A 9-year-old boy died in an ATV accident Tuesday in New Jersey after he lost control of the vehicle, was ejected and struck a piece of farm equipment.
The boy, who was wearing a helmet, was riding a Suzuki 250CC all-terrain vehicle, which is designed for older riders. State troopers who responded to the accident administered CPR on the scene, and the boy was transported to a nearby medical center where he later died.
From 1982 through 2012, there were 2,944 ATV-related fatalities in children under 16 years old, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Of these, 1,267 were in children younger than 12.
