Avoiding Accidents in Winter Weather

Mother Nature seems to be particularly cruel in the winter months. With snow and ice covering the roadways there is a significant increase in the probability of an accident. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration released a consumer advisory this month reminding drivers to prepare their vehicles for winter conditions. There are certain precautions motorists should take before embarking on a winter trip to reduce the chance of an accident. 

The NHTSA administrator, David L. Strickland said, “It’s not uncommon for families to travel long distances or through inclement weather to celebrate the holidays or visit with loved ones. With this in mind, it’s important that drivers properly maintain their vehicles and always drive responsibly – never texting behind the wheel or driving drunk and always wearing a seat belt.”

The first thing they suggest is that you have your car fully serviced and checked for any needed repairs. They explained that with cold weather comes a decrease in battery power because it takes more power to start your car in the winter than it does in warm weather. All drivers should make sure their battery has sufficient voltage.

Cooling systems should also be inspected. When the car’s coolant freezes, it swells, which can cause irreparable damage to the vehicle. Be sure that you have the proper amount of coolant and check your owner’s manual for specific requirements for your vehicle. Also you should make sure your windshield wiper fluid is topped off with a no-freeze fluid.

Defrosters should be checked to make sure they are working properly and windshield wiper blades should be replaced. One of the most important things to check on your vehicle is your tires. Make sure there is adequate pressure and tread. This could prevent slipping on patches of ice.

If weather is severe, it is always safer to avoid driving. Be sure you are prepared for any delays on the roads and have an emergency kit in case you become stuck or stranded. With some added caution this winter can be much safer and more enjoyable when traveling.
