BREAKING/DEVELOPING: The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed the death of an employee at the Arcelor Mittal Plant formerly known as Border Steel.
Apolonio Arras, 57, of Anthony, Texas was killed following reports of an explosion at about 2:40 a.m. Monday morning.
Employees at the plant, located at 8001 Border Steel, reported hearing a loud explosion and then saw heavy smoke. As workers were accounting for all personnel, they found one employee was missing. The workers entered the affected building and turned off the power to the furnaces which is when they found Arcelor on the ground. Arras was transported to the hospital with serious injuries and went into surgery shortly after. He died a few hours later.
This case has been referred to Crimes Against Persons Detectives who are working with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration to determine what happened in the incident.
