Approximately 33,000 Combi USA child safety seats have been recalled because of a risk the restraining straps could break in an accident.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration rejected a request from the company to be excused from a recall because the issue was “inconsequential to motor vehicle safety.”
Models included in the recall are:
* Model 8220 Coccoro seats manufactured from January 2009 to December 2012
* Model 8815 Zeus Turn seats built from July 2007 to March 2009
* Model 8336 Zeus 360 seats built from February 2009 to May 2012
The NHTSA performed a spot check in 2012 to test the seats for strength. When the straps failed and the company was contacted about a recall, Combi filed a petition to request an excusal from the recall. No strap failures had been reported and the company argued that its testing showed the straps to be strong enough.
The agency rejected the request and mandated a recall.
