Two oilfield workers were killed and nine others injured in a West Texas explosion Wednesday.
The blast was caused by a buildup of pressure as workers were changing out a wellhead, Loving County Sheriff Billy Hopper said. Authorities were notified of the explosion about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.
The two workers who were killed were pronounced dead at the scene. They were found about 20 feet from where the wellhead was being placed, according to Hopper. The nine workers suffered only minor injuries and were not sent to the hospital. The workers were employed by two subcontractor companies operating on behalf of RKI Exploration and Production, the company that owns the oilfield.
The explosion happened in a remote West Texas area, about 12 miles from Orla, Texas, and six miles south of the state border with New Mexico.
