While assisting in running pipeline on a platform off the coast of Mexico in 2010, a 40-year-old welder was injured when his hand was caught in a snatch pulley. The man suffered partial severing to 8 fingers and an injury to his right shoulder.
The incident occurred when the worker was securing a cable that ran through a 36-inch pipeline. Without warning, his co-workers turned on the cable, leading to the injuries. As his hand was caught, the worker screamed for help, and when none came he pulled his hand free, causing the severing of fingers and shoulder injury.
After several surgeries on his hands, as well as steroid injections and physical therapy for his shoulder, doctors have given differing opinions on the man’s ability to perform the required work level of a welder. His case was settled confidentially.
