On December 29, 2011, 80-year-old Loraine Franklin fell in her Georgetown home. Less than 24 hours later, she had died because of intracranial hemorrhaging, which her daughters say wouldn’t have been the case if not for Pradaxa, the anti-clotting medication Franklin was taking.
Unlike other anti-clotting drugs, for Pradaxa patients there is no effective reversal agent in the case of a traumatic bleeding event, which can turn a simple fall like Franklin’s into a death sentence.
Franklin’s daughter and dozens of others are suing Pradaxa’s German manufacturer, Boehringer Ingelheim, saying the company did not adequately warn doctors and patients about the lack of antidote and potential risks.
