Texas Lacking In Key Traffic Laws, According To National Report

In an annual national road safety report released Tuesday, Texas is amongst the worst states in passing highway safety laws . The report graded all 50 states and the District of Columbia based on 15 basic traffic safety laws, and Texas joined about a dozen other states in the bottom tier of rankings.

With 80,000 miles of state-run roadways, Texas’ last day with no roadway fatality was Nov. 7, 2000. But state lawmakers have been slow to adopt safety measures that the Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety, the group that released the report, say improve road safety and reduce deaths.

The report focuses on a new grant program offering federal incentives for states that enact laws regarding teen driver licensing, ignition interlock, distracted driving and occupant protection. The 15 laws evaluated by the group include seat belt, booster seat and motorcycle helmet measures, as well as teen driver restrictions, texting bans and tougher impaired driving laws. Of the 15 recommended laws, Texas did not have eight.
