The Texas Transportation Commission recently approved a maximum speed limit of 85 mph for a new, 41-mile toll road from Austin to Seguin, making Texas the first in the nation to have a speed limit that high. The roadway opens in November.
Most U.S. highways top out at 75 mph speed limits. A few rural highways in Texas and Utah already have 80 mph speed limits, though. Last year, the Texas Legislature approved the new speed maximum for some roads at 85 mph.
The higher speeds raise safety concerns, however. Houston car accident attorneys know that high-speed accidents can be some of the worst. A 2009 report published in the American Journal of Public Health showed that more than 12,500 deaths from 1995 to 2005 were attributable to increases in speed limits.
