A Russian cargo ship with 30 crewmembers became stranded in icy waters off eastern Russia today. The ship collects fresh fish from local boats and delivers the catch, processing and canning while en route to the delivery ports.
The Smolninsky refrigerated vessel is listing dangerously to its port side in the Sea of Okhotsk. Ice has formed on the ship and the crew is trying to chip it off.
Nearby vessels are en route to the ship, seeking primarily to evacuate the crew, and the high winds seem to have eased which should be helpful to all involved.
Helicopters are on order to be sent out to the ship first thing Saturday, weather-permitting.
