Panel: Sailboat Struck Island, Not Another Vessel

An independent review panel looking at the deaths of four sailors during the April 28 Newport to Ensenada Race said the 37-foot sailboat Aegean ran aground on North Coronado Island. Initial reports suggested the sailboat has collided with a larger ship in the middle of the night.

The U.S. Sailing Independent Review based its findings on information from race organizers, data from the Aegean’s track during the race, and information from the U.S. Coast Guard San Diego Sector’s investigation team.

The early theory that the Aegean had struck another vessel was undercut by a information from a website that tracks boats by GPS and which showed the sailboat was on course to head straight into the rocky island.
