Legendary college football coach Joe Paterno is facing the end of his 46-season run at Penn State in the wake of a sexual abuse scandal implicating several university officials.
Former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky has been charged with sexually abusing nine boys in a 15-year period. Two top university officials, Athletics Director Tim Curley and Senior Vice President Gary Schultz, are charged with perjury and failure to report to the authorities their knowledge of the allegations.
Paterno and Penn State President Graham B. Spanier are under fire for failing to act appropriately after learning that Sandusky may have been abusing children. Although a grand jury report detailed that Paterno followed protocol in reporting to Curley an accusation of abuse in 2002, the once-celebrated coach has been condemned for not following up and ensuring the incident was reported to the authorities.
Reports citing two unnamed university officials said talks were ongoing concerning how to handle the coach’s departure from the school by the end of this season.
