Honoring Veterans for their Service

Today is Veterans Day, a day set aside every year to honor those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Before 1954, this day was known as Armistice Day, first proclaimed by U.S. President Woodrow Wilson on Nov. 11, 1919, to be celebrated every Nov. 11 in honor of the day World War I ended.

In his proclamation, President Wilson said:

“To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations.”

It wasn’t until 1938 that a Congressional Act declared Nov. 11 a legal holiday; in 1954, that act amended the name of the holiday to what we now know it as, Veterans Day.
