Fuel Tank Near Port of Galveston Burns After Explosion

An explosion at a fuel storage and intermodal terminal near the Port of Galveston about 7 p.m. Thursday was heard across the island and into parts of the Galveston County mainland. Firefighters responded to the 3-alarm fire that shut down the road to Pelican Island and left Texas A&M University at Galveston students on lockdown.

There were about six people on shift at the Texas International Terminals, but no one was injured in the fire, CEO Todd Sullivan said. At least two storage tanks carrying light crude caught fire, a Galveston spokesperson said. Firefighters from several nearby towns joined Galveston crews to fight the blaze.

The roadway and shelter-in-place order for the university were lifted about 10:30 p.m. The cause of the fire and explosion were still being investigated.
