A fuel tanker flipped on the Long Island Expressway exploding and killing the driver and melting the expressway itself.
The tanker was trying to avoid a smaller vehicle having car trouble and slowing down, and in trying to maneuver out of the way, the tanker driver lost control of his vehicle and flipped it.
The driver, Mujahid Shah, 57, of Brooklyn, New York reportedly had picked up 12,000 gallons of fuel to deliver to Yaphank, New York and this fuel ignited in the crash.
Firefighters shot foam onto the oily blaze, and sand was spread to contain the fuel, but the heat melted an overhead road sign, which sent metal down across all eight lanes of the highway.
Mr. Shah’s truck was operated by Kittery Transport, based out of Maine.
