Aggressive driving contributes to at least one third of accidents and injuries, and up to two thirds of fatal accidents every year. Now, a new study finds that drivers who perceive their car as an extension of themselves have a strong tendency towards aggressive driving .
There has been little research conducted into the psychology of aggressive drivers. This new study aims to throw light on the personalities, values, and attitudes of these drivers.
The study found that persons who view their cars as an extension of their self-identity, or view their vehicles as their exclusive property, feel the need to defend their vehicle at any cost. Such people are more likely to drive aggressively as a result, even if it necessitates breaking the law. Researchers found that many aggressive drivers admitted to breaking the law on more than one occasion.
Some people, like male drivers, are more prone to aggressive driving. People who are materialistic, or have compulsive tendencies, or are under severe time and other pressures, are also more susceptible to aggressive driving.
Aggressive driving is driving without taking into consideration the safety of other motorists on the road. Such behavior can include a number of driving practices like:
1. driving at excessive speeds
2. tailgating or following the vehicle in front too closely
3. changing lanes frequently
4. road rage
As Houston car accident lawyers, we frequently see examples of aggressive driving and the consequences of such practices. Accidents that are caused when a motorist drives at high speeds, follow vehicles too closely, or changes lanes randomly or frequently, often lead to serious injuries or fatalities.
