The first maritime piracy incident of 2014 occurred Thursday when pirates tried unsuccessfully to take over an LPG tanker in the Gulf of Guinea off the western coast of Africa.
Five pirates boarded the driving gas tanker on Jan. 2 about 55 nautical miles west of Corisco Island, Gabon, according to the International Maritime Bureau. The crew raised the alarm and blew the ship’s horn, prompting the pirates to escape.
The IMB reported 234 piracy incidents worldwide in 2013.
