Commercial Diver Survives 40 Minutes After Air Supply Line Cut

A commercial diver who was working 242 feet underwater in the North Sea survived for 38 minutes on just his emergency air tank after his air supply line was snagged and severed.

The diver, Chris Lemons, had fallen unconscious by the time colleagues found him and pulled him to safety. He was revived and made a full recovery after decompression treatment.

The diver was inspecting a drilling structure 115 miles of the coast of Scotland. When the Bibby Offshore-operated support vessel began drifting, the use of thrusters to control the boat’s position caused the “umbical” line to snag which led to its severing.

A company spokesman praised the crew for its skill and expertise in rescuing Lemons.
