An accident on Interstate 96 near Michigan 52 at 11:42 p.m. on Nov. 2 led to four confirmed deaths and several injuries after a semi-truck struck multiple vehicles caught in the traffic due to work on power lines that ran parallel to the highway.
According to witnesses, the semi-truck driver seemed oblivious to the fact that cars were stopped ahead and was unable to brake in time. The collision caused sparks in several of the vehicles, creating flames, and resulted in over seventeen people visiting area hospitals for treatment.
According to the Michigan State Police, the driver did not see how long the backup was in front of him and did not have time to react as the truck approached M-52. The local law enforcement agencies took to X (formerly Twitter) to share updates on the scene and traffic tie-ups following this terrible incident.
While this collision occurred in Michigan, accidents involving multiple vehicles, or pile-ups, occur frequently on roadways nationwide, including here in Texas. These incidents can stem from a variety of factors. Often, distraction plays a significant role in preventing drivers from noticing stopped cars ahead.
Distraction does not address drivers’ indulgence in illegal activities such as texting or talking on the phone. Another important form of distraction is cognitive distraction. It sets in when a driver’s mind drifts away from driving due to stress, fatigue, or some sort of preoccupying thoughts. In these situations, reaction times and awareness of the conditions may be seriously impaired, leading to devastating collisions like the one recently seen on Interstate 96.
Other conditions include vehicle mechanical failure and driving style issues; drivers will hardly be able to react in time to sudden stops.
A trucking accident victim has a right to seek compensation, particularly when the involvement of injury or damage is present. Adhering to the right steps following an accident can make a huge difference in whether you recover compensation or not.
First and foremost, victims need to report the accident to the local authorities. In Texas, one has up to 10 days to file a report in case of an accident involving injury or substantial property damage. This report provides an official record which may prove to be very critical of any claim. Next comes the gathering of supportive evidence for your claim, such as taking photographs of the scene, which may be of prime importance and crucial in proving negligence or liability.
Consulting with an experienced local law firm, such as Schechter, Shaffer & Harris, can enlighten victims on how to go through the complicated steps. They help negotiate insurance claims and represent the victim’s interests. Lastly, keeping a detailed record of medical treatments and associated expenses related to one’s injuries can substantially strengthen their case and help them seek fair compensation for their suffering.
