A judge’s approval of $7.8 billion class-action lawsuit against BP for damages from the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill is being appealed by more than 10,000 individuals and businesses.
The company agreed in March to a settlement of an estimated $7.8 billion for most private plaintiff’s claims of economic loss, property damage and injuries stemming from the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon that killed 11 people and sent millions of gallons of oil spilling into the Gulf.
BP still faces fines of billions of dollars for civil pollution and restoration of national resources. The oil giant has also agreed to a guilty plea in 14 criminal indictments, including 11 counts of felony seaman’s manslaughter.
