Ship Involved In Barge Collision Had Equipment Problems

The U.S. Coast Guard inspection showed that a bulk cargo ship that collided Saturday with a barge, causing 168,000 gallons of heavy oil to spill into the Houston Ship Channel and Galveston Bay, had problems with its navigation equipment.

Coast Guard inspectors also found problems with the vessel’s load lines. The issues were found in the post-incident inspection of the vessel, the Summer Wind, operated by the Greek company Cleopatra Shipping Agency Ltd.

The Summer Wind was en route to a Port of Houston dock when the collision occurred near the Texas City Dike. The ship collided in heavy fog conditions with a barge under tow by a Kirby Inland Marine tugboat, Miss Susan. The tug was piloting two loaded barges from the Port of Texas City to the Intracoastal Waterway.
